Breeding method

The genetics and selection of brood stock fish for next generation is based on family breeding programmes. For every generation a large number of families are produced. The families are kept separately in identical raceways until the fish are P.I.T.-tag marked and followed individually.

The informations collected are evaluated in a data base and forms the basis of calculations of individual breeding values and selection of parents for the next generation. Breeding values are based on recordings of performance from the individual itself as well as from full- and half siblings.

To avoid inbreeding, related parents are never crossed.
Apart from the breeding work carried out on the farms, feedback from the industry is important in evaluating the progress in performance.

The breeding programmes in Aquasearch ova is aimed at 5 product lines, which means that breeding values for the specific parameters are given priorities according to each of the lines.
